MxMo: Orange

I know that I said that my next post would be Tales of the Cocktail related, but that was because I forgot that today was Mixology Monday.

Normally I’m a bit too busy to come up with drinks for MxMo, but seeing as orange is pretty much a no-brainer, and the people at Food & Wine have taken notice, I’ve decided to get off (on?) my fat ass and do an entry for what may be the TSN turning point (you Canadians will get the reference) of MxMo.

Gwen over at Intoxicated Zodiac is hosting this month, and she is somehow managing to put an astrological spin on all things cocktail related. That sounds like way too much work for me as I have a hard enough time fighting the urge to post a recipe and leave it at that; with no filler or back story.

As stated earlier, the theme this month is orange, and after wading through hundreds of recipes using orange bitters, and tens of recipes using orange flower water, I’ve decide to go straight to the basics, and just use orange juice.

Now you may be screaming, “BORING!!!”, and normally I would agree with you, but two of my favorite drinks this summer contain both orange juice AND bitters. I find that the natural sweetness in oj makes a great yin to the yang of the bitter of amaros and, in particular, to Campari.

So this, my first Mixology Monday, will give you a two-for-one. Behold the magic of orange:

…………………………………………………………………
BLOOD ORANGE

1 ½ oz gin
½ oz Amaro Montenegro
½ oz: Campari
1 oz fresh orange juice

shake with ice
strain into cocktail glass

…………………………………………………………………

and…..

…………………………………………………………………
UNION CLUB

2 oz Bourbon
½ oz maraschino liqueur
½ oz Campari
1 ½ oz orange juice

shake with ice
strain into cocktail glass

…………………………………………………………………

Again, go over to Intoxicated Zodiac to see the rest of Mixology Monday.
Stay tuned for more TotC posts next. Honest.

  1. Jamie, you’re killing me posting photos of those glasses that I covet (but am unable to buy anywhere for any price).

  2. Jamie, an absolutely beautiful shot.

  3. That Union Club sounds good – I’m on a mission to find a Campari based cocktail I enjoy, and I think that’ll be the next one I try…

  4. Anita, if you still cant find Spiegelau, go to your local Riedel rep and talk to them. They are now owned by the same company. (We get ours in New York)

Rick, coming from you, I appreciate it.

Jay, if the Union Club doesn’t work for you, let me know, I have one more Campari drink that you should try if the Union Club doesn’t do it for you.

  8. I finally have the Union Club a go Jamie, and enjoyed it very much. I’m still intrigued about the other Campari drink you mentioned though…

  9. Jay:
the drink that I was thinking of tastes exactly like grapefruit, so I’m afraid that you may not like it. It will be posted in the near future.

  10. Jamie –

I found the Spiegelau glasses, but is it the Vino Grande Dessert or Vino Grande Moscato that is used in this photograph for the Union Club?

  11. Mark:
Looking in to it for you….

  12. hey, how did i miss the Union Club? it’s even named for the bar where i work!!!

  13. Those glasses look like LSA champagne coupes to me – hard, but not impossible to track down online…..

  14. I’ve tried the union club twice in the past few days using clementines (that’s what I have on hand…I’ll use oranges soon) and I really like this one.
