TotC: Johnnie Bee Good
I first met Cheryl at the Carousel Bar in the Hotel Monteleone. She happened to be sitting with Lisa Laird (of Laird’s Applejack fame), and, as she likes to tell it, ignored me until she found out that I had done some episodes of The Cocktail Spirit with Robert Hess. Thank God for media and alcohol, or I wouldn’t be able to get any girls to talk to me!
Anyway, Cheryl and I quickly became good friends, with me buying her a drink and she giving me a personally designed Miss Charming tie pin. For those who don’t know Cheryl, she is always the life of the party, entertaining and mystifying people with one of the hundreds of bar tricks that she knows, and tonight was not to be an exception, with the bar staff at the Monteleone stumped by her glowing ice cube trick.
After many drinks at the bar, I was getting a little out of control, and Cheryl had forgotten my name, so she scolded me with a:
JOHNNIE BEE GOOD
2 oz Johnnie Walker Scotch
½ oz honey
shake over ice
strain into a chilled cocktail glass
garnish with a lime lemon twist
Looking at this recipe, I wondered if it might be too sweet, so I emailed Cheryl to find out if I had received the right recipe. She assured me that it was correct, and suggested that it might even need more honey, according to feedback she received at the Cocktail Hour. I wonder if this might be the Big Easy’s sweet tooth talking?
Cheryl also mentioned that this is a drink that could easily be heated and enjoyed in a snifter. If anyone tries this drink at home, let me know how it turns out. My immediate impulse, looking at the recipe, is to add some Peychaud’s bitters. Anyone? Anyone?
